A young woman named Danielle has been given shapeshifting ability as a teenager following an occult ritual. She subsequently assumes the persona of Desiree, a cunning seductress who entices unsuspecting men. Desiree diabolically plots to drain them of everything they have of value—their wealth, their reputations, and their relationships—as a form of revenge for an unspeakable horror perpetrated on her as a youth.

Desiree discovers she is as much a victim of the powers of darkness as the men she seduces. There seems to be no escape for her until she meets Joshua, the director of a local youth center and assistant minister at his father’s church. Although the powers of darkness drive Desiree to destroy Joshua through a series of attempted seductions, Joshua stubbornly refuses. He is convinced Desiree can be freed from the dark entity that controls her.

Description

“…Desiree…”

Joshua Dawson, a young minister and director of the local youth center has no clue his life will never be the same when he meets with a very desperate and distraught man, Carl Steadman, who arrives at Joshua’s office and tells a bizarre tale of a shape shifter, Desiree, who targets her victims for their souls. One bite from this demonized seductress and Desiree becomes an extremely addictive aphrodisiac, and once a consort; a man will surrender anything to continue seeing Desiree until there is nothing left to prove his devotion but his soul.

Joshua launches his own personal investigation of Steadman’s story. He follows Desiree to a nightspot, where he deliberately encounters her in the parking lot. However, this encounter catches Joshua totally unprepared for the unsettling witness of Desiree’s paranormal abilities. His basic instincts for self preservation scream from within to run from this woman as fast as he can and not look back, yet strangely he hears his own voice arranging a meeting with her instead.

Desiree agrees to meet with Joshua only if he comes alone. When the two meet, Desiree attempts to seduce him, but he successfully wards off her initial advances. However, hell hath no fury like a Desiree scorned. Desiree secretly launches an offensive campaign to seduce this young minister and destroy his relationship with Susan, his fiancée. Joshua launches his own offensive, enlisting the help of his father, Pastor Dawson and others to deliver this demonized seductress from Satan’s hold on her.

Inspiration

Vanderbilt says the idea for The Gatekeeper came to him as he endeavored to write a gripping and unusual story about a young lady crying out from deep within and fighting for her very life.

The Gatekeeper is the portrayal of this young lady, Desiree, whose attempt to escape her tragic childhood unfortunately has disastrous results as she seeks refuge from individuals who turn out to be members of a satanic group. Before long Desiree finds herself indwelled and in bondage to a very powerful demon who gives her the ability to shapeshift at will and easily seduce very wealthy men by her physical beauty.

However, tormented by constant nightmares and voices, Desiree discovers she is as much a victim to the powers of darkness as the men she victimizes. There seems to be no hope and escape for Desiree until she meets a nice looking young man, Joshua, the director of the local youth center and an assistant minister at his father’s church. Nevertheless, the powers of darkness within Desiree move her to seek to destroy Joshua through a series of deceptions and attempted seductions, but Joshua stubbornly refuses to give up on Desiree, and thus begins the age old struggle between good and evil and light and darkness, because Joshua is convinced Desiree can be freed from the dark entity which controls her life.

It’s been said that the hallmark of a successful book is its’ ability to elicit emotion from the reader; either happiness or anger, hatred or love, pity or loathing, or a myriad of other emotions. The Gatekeeper is such a book. From the moment we meet Desiree, the shape-shifting seductress, we are pulled between compassion for the girl she was and open loathing and secret fascination with what she has become. Desiree is responsible for the destruction of many lives. Joshua, the Youth Center Director, decides to confront her. Armed only with prayer, he fails to heed the warnings and meets with her alone.

The Gatekeeper is well researched, well written and believable – a tough task when talking about demon possession and shape shifting and the dialogue is well executed. The author handles the issue of child abuse and victimization with compassion and understanding without becoming maudlin.

Interestingly, the website for this book: Gatekeeperthebook.com includes a professional and well-executed book trailer. As the trailer says, “before there is a movie – there was a book.” I love the book and am eagerly waiting for the movie.

  2. Loves Books

This was a well told story of a young pastor who took the time to minister to a woman in spiritual bondage. Many might have written this woman off but the young pastor, along with his father and a faithful committed few, trusted the power of God through His Son Jesus Christ to completely redeem and transform this demonically possessed woman’s life. This book will cause you to reflect on the sovereignty of God in every situation and what ministry and discipleship really means as we attempt to lead others to Christ. Powerful!

  3. Social Worker Bee

As a Social Worker we see many different mental illnesses ranging from Schizophreniform Disorder to Schizotypal Personality Disorder. This was an excellent book for all to read to allow us as Christians to see what a fine line lies between mental illness and demon possession. The author has done his research and without bogging us down in research he managed to bring each character to life. I found myself matching my personality and character to certain people in the book. Thanks for this excellent fiction novel that hinges on reality. Looking forward to many more and thanking God for using you in this manner.

From innocence to a demonic, enticing vixen. Your past encircles your future. A story which shows when bad things happen to you, it tends to touch others in the pathway of your life. Dark days settling on lives and the willingness to make choices against one’s better judgement. You can’t escape your consequences, but you always have ONE you can turn to for deliverance.

  6. Brian Banashak

I don’t often read books in one sitting, but I couldn’t put The Gatekeeper down. The attempted seduction of a preacher is a difficult subject, but Brabson handles it tastefully. PG-13, a little too intense for pre-teens. The Gatekeeper will serve as a warning to men who think they can play around without getting burned!

  7. sknewman

The Gatekeeper is an intriguing story with a timely message of the powerful conflict between good and evil so prevalent in our times. The book is well researched and the characters and relationships are well developed. You will quickly be drawn into the story and find the book hard to put down. The truths in the book will engage your mind for a long time. The character of the young minister, Joshua, struggles with a destructive demon embodied in the seductive Desiree. Joshua discovers his own strengths and weaknesses as he battles an evil so overwhelming that his entire life is shaken. Everything hinges on his ability to prayerfully trust and seek his all-powerful God. It is unusual to read of extreme wickedness and depravity balanced with such compassion and concern. A great story that will not be quickly forgotten.

We shake our heads in disbelief as we read the headlines of powerful men who have wrecked their lives and futures with their sexual indiscretions. Before reading the book, I would have been shocked at the men’s weaknesses and involvement in sin. Now I am amazed at the strength and deadly power of Satin and evil. The book may change the way you look at evil.

  8. Unohooiam

I found myself wanting to read this book straight through. It is a quick read with a wonderfully enticing story line. The subject is thought provoking, making me ponder why demon possession is so taboo these days. Especially when our world moves further from God’s will. I am proud that the author so represents the love and power of God and his defeat of sin and death on the cross.

This book takes you on winding roads of emotions. One moment everything is happy, the next curve is full of trepidation, and then you’re riding on a long stretch of curiosity. The characters are full of confession, depression, and possession. You never know who will stand and who will fall. If you like thrillers, I would highly recommend.
